In this professional development session, veteran educator Cari Shurman shared powerful insights about using gentle movement techniques to improve student focus, reduce stress, and create calmer classrooms. After observing Chinese students maintaining exceptional focus through regular movement breaks, Shurman developed a simplified Tai Chi program for Western classrooms. What struck her most was seeing 70 students transition from intense focus to fluid movement and back again, maintaining engagement throughout their school day.

Movement isn’t just a break from learning – it’s an essential part of how students learn and process information. When students engage in purposeful movement, especially structured, mindful activities, they experience improved blood flow to the brain, reduced stress levels, enhanced focus, and better information retention. Unlike random physical activity that might only energize students briefly, intentional movement practices like the simple Tai Chi techniques Cari teaches can have lasting effects on students’ ability to concentrate, regulate emotions, and engage with learning material. These movements don’t require special equipment or extensive time – even 5-10 minutes of purposeful movement can transform classroom dynamics and enhance learning outcomes.
