Module 2 – The Developing Brain

It’s important for children (and the adults in their lives) to have a clear understanding of how the brain works and what its important functions and parts are.

In particular, this knowledge helps children separate themselves from their “bad” behavior. When children understand what’s happening in their brain, particularly with big emotions and feelings, they’re more likely to respond by saying, “This doesn’t mean I’m a bad kid; it’s just what’s happening in my brain. And I can take control of that.”

By learning about the brain, children gain the power to become aware and proactive rather than unaware and reactive. This understanding helps them make conscious choices and take charge of their thoughts, feelings, and actions.

When you complete this module you’ll be able to:

  • Explain the three key parts of the brain that influence a child’s mind.
  • Use puppets and hand models to teach and practice brain basics.
  • Teach students a shared language you can use to communicate about the brain.
  • Integrate brain knowledge into your daily routines in the classroom.
