As the school year winds down and the flurry of end-of-year activities ramps up, it’s important for teachers to prioritize their own well-being in order to effectively support their students. After all, educators set the tone for the entire class.

The month of May brings with it a mixture of excitement, worry, fear, and stress for many kids. It’s not uncommon to witness regression or emotional dysregulation at this point in the school year, as the heightened chaos of the season pushes students into the “Guard Dog” (amygdala) part of their brains.

For students accustomed to the comforting predictability of the school routine, the looming unpredictability of summer can be a source of anxiety. As teachers, it’s helpful to validate these feelings, while offering stability and reassurance. In this Professional Development session, Amanda Petersen shares some tips for navigating the end of the school year with compassion:

  • Carve out time for morning check-ins to connect with students on a personal level, understanding their individual needs.
  • Seek input from students on how to constructively channel their emotions. Do they need mindful coloring, a calming brain break, energizing movement, etc?
  • Be intentional about maintaining mindful practices that have anchored classroom routines throughout the school year.
