Foundations: Brain Anatomy

Why teach the developing brain?

Most important: Kids of all ages love learning about their brain!

Between the ages of 3-5, the brain changes faster than at any other time in development; it has the highest capacity for learning and is most receptive to building a foundation for brain architecture. A child’s brain undergoes an impressive amount of change between conception and age three. At birth, it already has about all the neurons it will ever have. It doubles in size in the first year; by age three, it has reached 80 percent of its adult volume. The second period we know about so far that the brain has the most playability is the early adolescent years. By targeting the early childhood and early adolescent years, we can support healthy brain development with tools for self-regulation.
