Our January Professional Development session of the 2025-2026 school year focused on strategies for managing challenging classroom behaviors and implementing brain breaks effectively. Amanda led a discussion on addressing attention-seeking behaviors in students, with participants sharing practical solutions such as using sign language, giving students special helper roles, and teaching impulse control skills.

Brain Breaks for Classroom Routines

Amanda and Suzanne discussed the importance of incorporating brain breaks and intentional pauses into classroom routines, particularly for teachers working with small groups of diverse age levels. They emphasized the benefits of starting each session with a consistent routine, such as breathing exercises or chimes, to help students focus and regulate their behavior. Amanda shared that brains are wired for consistency, and regular practice of these breaks can build neurons and create new pathways.

Trauma-Informed Brain Break Strategies

Amanda discussed the importance of implementing brain breaks in classrooms as a trauma-informed practice, emphasizing their benefits for all students. She shared examples of consistent brain breaks even during December's busy activities, such as before Dibbles testing and during kindergarten performances. Amanda emphasized predictable routines and mindful practices help students stay calm and focused. The group then discussed the rising intensity of difficult behaviors in classrooms, with Amanda inviting participants to share scenarios and offer support to each other.

Classroom Management Discussion

The meeting then focused on classroom management challenges and strategies, with participants sharing suggestions including using sign language, giving the child special helper duties, and connecting with parents. Another participant raised concerns about children interrupting during informal conversations, which led to a discussion about impulse control and teaching children to wait their turn. The group also discussed strategies for implementing brain breaks and handling classroom disruptions.
